- Essentially it is because we are told to watch by the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
- Mark 13 v 34-36“For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
- What is it Jesus is asking us to watch? Surely it is events happening in the world so that we are not caught unawares or ‘sleeping’ when he returns.
- The idea with the Weekly World Watch is to focus our minds on those events which are happening to stop us from going to sleep. To help in a small way to keep us awake and ready to welcome our Lord when he does return.
- We meet to remember our Lord Jesus each week and we eat bread and drink wine to remember his sacrifice. We do this so that we do not forget the price paid for our sins.
- If we did not meet each week then the sacrifice of our Lord would not be as prominent in our minds as it should be – we would begin to forget.
- The same I believe applies to watching. We need to watch each and every week. So that we view the world constantly through God’s eyes not through our own. In that way we stay awake and are ready when our Lord Jesus returns.
